Be Selfish

Posted on April 10th, 2016 to Barefoot Training

Taking care of one’s self is essential to being able to take care of others.

As a trainer I did not always maintain an adequate physical condition and it ultimately impacted everything and everyone around me.

A particular instance was when I made one last effort to get picked up by an NFL organization. I trained for several months, often 2 to 3 times per day, and put up some very respectable numbers at the combine workout. My training business simultaneously thrived despite the long hectic hours during this time period. Unfortunately, I was never picked up and as a result I brought my workout intensity down to nearly nothing for the 3 months thereafter.

One would think, that with all of this new free time due to no longer performing sprint work, weightlifting, and position specific drills, that my training and coaching business would improve. That was not the case. My disappointment and lack of passion permeated my business and I no longer had a personal journey that was inspiring my clients or my followers.

As a result I lacked any sort of motivation, preferred to sleep in, got lazy, and gained 30 pounds (pictured above). It wasn’t until I got involved with InnerCity Weightlifting (ICW) that I finally picked my ass back up and started grinding again.

At that same moment I committed to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is like joining a new family. Even if I miss a month of Jiu Jitsu training, I know I can always go back and see the same great people trying to submit one another. It is oddly comforting.

The same can be said for ICW. No matter how much time has passed or what distance lies between us, ICW will always be there for both their students and their coaches, past and present. (I would like to mention sidebar that Pedestal Footwear is now working directly with ICW and we are pumped.)

This is all to say that by taking care of yourself you can more adequately take care of others. By constantly working towards something, you inherently inspire everyone around you.

The students of ICW and Michael Fontes of Kimura BJJ inspired me to rise above the bullshit excuses and they helped me to help myself which ultimately allowed me to help others more effectively.

You may be asking yourself, “how does this relate to me and my Pedestals?”. By training in your Pedestals you are mitigating your risk of injury which will allow you to live healthier and help support yourself and others at a greater more impactful capacity.

Being part of Pedestal and watching our community grow organically is a very special thing for me because we are providing a U.S. made product with real benefits for the end user. Not many companies can say that and this makes me incredibly proud.

So remember, ALWAYS Give Back, Train Smarter, Build Your Base, and Keep Crushing!
