    NBA Strength Coach Workout

Earlier this month, the Celtics played the Cavaliers here in Boston and I had a chance to workout and talk shop with the Cavaliers strength coaches Derek Millender and Alex Moore.

For those of you who are unaware, the life of an NBA strength coach is a fascinating opportunity. That being said, there are many parts of the job that only a certain type of person can handle. These include the extremely hectic travel schedule, no sleep, being on call 24/7, and lugging bags all around the country.

After getting into Boston at 3am and barely sleeping with another game to play that night, I was grateful and impressed that they were able to meet me for a lunch time crush session.

Before I share our workout, you may be thinking that we did some new nerdy exercise that these guys sat down and made up. For both Derek and Alex, there is no ego when it comes to training and their biggest objective is hammering the basics (squat, hinge, push, pull, carry) over and over again.

Here is what we did in our Pedestals. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

    -Rowing Machine - low intensity

    -Dynamic warm up

    A1) Deadlift - 5 x 5 with increased weight each set

    A2) Pull-Up - Bodyweight - 5 x 10 - Changing grip each set.

*Side note - That alone was a killer and would be a great workout if you were in a crunch for time.

    B1) KB Swing - 3 x 8

B2) KB Single Leg Deadlift (same side) - 3 x 8 each leg

    B3) One arm KB Shoulder Press - 3 x 10/12

    C1) High Box Step Ups - 3 x 10 each leg

    C2) Adductor - 3 x 15

    C3) Abductor - 3 x 15

C4) Dips - Bodyweight - 25 reps (rest pause if needed. Do in as little sets as possible)

Pictured below is Derek rocking the 2.5's on the left and Alex with the throwback 1.0's on the right.

    Much Love,

    Jim Smith Approved

Our Testimonial Tuesday features Jim Smith aka Smitty Diesel. Below is a little more about him:

Jim is the founder and owner of Diesel Strength and Conditioning. For the past 16 years, Jim has been helping pro athletes from the NHL, NFL, and UFC, as well as, high school and collegiate athletes from various sports achieve their strength and performance goals.

Along with Joe DeFranco, Jim created the world-renowned CPPS certification, called by Muscle & Fitness magazine “the best curriculum for trainers we’ve ever seen.” Jim is on the Fitness Advisory boards for, Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, and and is regularly featured in Men’s Fitness, Muscle & Fitness and Men’s Health magazines.

We run all of our warm-ups in socks and barefoot because all of my clients and athletes have locked up feet and ankles from wearing shoes all day long. The problem is, if you lose your ability to move at the ankle and your foot dexterity is terrible, it will have a massive negative effect on your ability to move well. This is a really big deal, especially if you're trying to optimize your technique for loaded strength training movements like deadlifts and squats - as well as expressing power and speed for all athletic movements.

Pedestals have been a game-changer for me and my athletes! They are super comfortable and the grip is perfect for all of our ground-based movements. I highly recommend them for coaches, trainers, athletes, and everyone else who loves to train!

(v-necks are a must when you don't have a neck...)

We are approaching our first full-year of being online and what an epic year it's been.

The quality of people we now have the privilege of calling friends, partners, and customers still tugs at the heart strings when I take a second to think about it.

There is something special about the wellness community, particularly the one we now belong to. Their sense of purpose, selflessness, and commitment to others, are qualities that are becoming harder and harder to find.

The other qualities that make this group so special and perhaps most notable is their humor, vulnerability, and willingness to call bull-sh**. They speak about their personal experiences as coaches and as athletes from the heart with an unwavering sensibility.

It is a beautiful thing to know that this group of experts are always acting in the best interest of those whom they reach and work with. We like to consider what we do at Pedestal in the same scope as said experts.

Our goal is to provide the highest quality locally sourced product with the intention of improving the overall health and wellness of anyone who puts a pair on. We know people have recognized this mission and have committed their time and resources to supporting us, and for this, we will always be grateful.

That said, much like the customers and coaches whom support us, we consistently work towards improving our product and how we do business. We know that our incremental progress is a culmination of the day to day communication and interaction between ourselves and our community.

Pedestal is a reflection of the coaches, athletes, and customers we work with, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Thank you for making us better and for always crushing.

    Hugs & Deadlifts,

Below are pics of just some of the awesome people whom we call friends.

You spoke, we listened- Our 2.0's are almost here!

You spoke, we listened- Our 2.0's are almost here!

As we approach our first year anniversary, we wanted to share some exciting news. After receiving some great feedback from our customers, we started sketching and designing a new and improved product.

We are really excited for what is to come here at Pedestal in a few short months. Our first goal is to improve the functionality of the product and the customer experience associated with it.

Here is a list of all of the additions included in the next versions (2.0) vs. the first (1.0):

    1. Silver thread/lining (2.0) vs. Silver treatment (1.0) - New silver lining will never wash out or fade, keeping the product bacteria and odor free for life.

    2. Smaller/more concentrated grips (2.0) vs. Large grips (1.0) - New concentrated triangular grips allow for better traction in lateral movements and durability on multiple surfaces.

    3. Finer thread count (2.0) vs. Heavier thread (1.0) - New versions will be more lightweight and breathable. This means more athletic and faster drying time.

    4. Mesh bag - Easy way to keep your Pedestals together in your bag or in the wash (although you do not really have to wash them given the silver lining).

    5. Clear packaging - Same branded packaging but allows customer to see the product before opening.

    6. Multiple colors- Available in 5 color patterns- black/gray, black/white, hot pink/black, eggshell blue/black, red/black)

    7. Athletic/sporty logo- More wearable and athletic look. More branded apparel to come soon (t-shirts, shorts, hats, etc.)

    8. Available in two styles- Low and Hybrid (6 inch)

Here are a few first look photos of the hybrid style in eggshell blue/black...

We look forward to having our new versions available for pre-order in the next few weeks.

Thank you again for your feedback and support. We look forward to an awesome second year in business!

    With Love,
