    NBA Strength Coach Workout

Earlier this month, the Celtics played the Cavaliers here in Boston and I had a chance to workout and talk shop with the Cavaliers strength coaches Derek Millender and Alex Moore.

For those of you who are unaware, the life of an NBA strength coach is a fascinating opportunity. That being said, there are many parts of the job that only a certain type of person can handle. These include the extremely hectic travel schedule, no sleep, being on call 24/7, and lugging bags all around the country.

After getting into Boston at 3am and barely sleeping with another game to play that night, I was grateful and impressed that they were able to meet me for a lunch time crush session.

Before I share our workout, you may be thinking that we did some new nerdy exercise that these guys sat down and made up. For both Derek and Alex, there is no ego when it comes to training and their biggest objective is hammering the basics (squat, hinge, push, pull, carry) over and over again.

Here is what we did in our Pedestals. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

    -Rowing Machine - low intensity

    -Dynamic warm up

    A1) Deadlift - 5 x 5 with increased weight each set

    A2) Pull-Up - Bodyweight - 5 x 10 - Changing grip each set.

*Side note - That alone was a killer and would be a great workout if you were in a crunch for time.

    B1) KB Swing - 3 x 8

B2) KB Single Leg Deadlift (same side) - 3 x 8 each leg

    B3) One arm KB Shoulder Press - 3 x 10/12

    C1) High Box Step Ups - 3 x 10 each leg

    C2) Adductor - 3 x 15

    C3) Abductor - 3 x 15

C4) Dips - Bodyweight - 25 reps (rest pause if needed. Do in as little sets as possible)

Pictured below is Derek rocking the 2.5's on the left and Alex with the throwback 1.0's on the right.

    Much Love,

    Testimonial Tuesday- Kevin Carr

"The products that Pedestal Footwear are putting out are far and away the best choice for minimalist footwear training. The sole of a traditional shoe prevents the foot from receiving rich sensory input  from the ground, ultimately changing the way that we move. While training barefoot would be great, we can't have hundreds of dirty feet all over our gym and regular socks slip on the turf and get worn through quickly. Pedestal provides us a solution. They've given us all the benefits of barefoot training in a sock that is durable, grippy, and best of all...stink proof."

Pressed for time? Here is a quick circuit from Kevin.

    1. 10 Squats

    2. 10 Swings

    3. 10 Rows Each

    4. 10 Swings

    5. 20 Pushups

    6. 10 Swings

Repeat as many times as possible for 30 minutes

    Thank You Savages

(v-necks are a must when you don't have a neck...)

We are approaching our first full-year of being online and what an epic year it's been.

The quality of people we now have the privilege of calling friends, partners, and customers still tugs at the heart strings when I take a second to think about it.

There is something special about the wellness community, particularly the one we now belong to. Their sense of purpose, selflessness, and commitment to others, are qualities that are becoming harder and harder to find.

The other qualities that make this group so special and perhaps most notable is their humor, vulnerability, and willingness to call bull-sh**. They speak about their personal experiences as coaches and as athletes from the heart with an unwavering sensibility.

It is a beautiful thing to know that this group of experts are always acting in the best interest of those whom they reach and work with. We like to consider what we do at Pedestal in the same scope as said experts.

Our goal is to provide the highest quality locally sourced product with the intention of improving the overall health and wellness of anyone who puts a pair on. We know people have recognized this mission and have committed their time and resources to supporting us, and for this, we will always be grateful.

That said, much like the customers and coaches whom support us, we consistently work towards improving our product and how we do business. We know that our incremental progress is a culmination of the day to day communication and interaction between ourselves and our community.

Pedestal is a reflection of the coaches, athletes, and customers we work with, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Thank you for making us better and for always crushing.

    Hugs & Deadlifts,

Below are pics of just some of the awesome people whom we call friends.

    What business are you in?

    What business are you in?

We often get asked "What business are you in?". There are multiple avenues with which we could answer. One could say we are in the "performance apparel space", you could say we are an "e-commerce sock company", or you might even say we are in "retail".

Our problem with those definitions is that it doesn't get to the very core of our business of enlightening and educating people on the benefits of using Pedestals when training. If we provide a product that helps someone live a healthier and better life, you could say we are a healthcare company right?

    According to google definitions:

My personal opinion is that the word "healthcare" gets thrown around a lot, but what is the difference between a surgeon and a strength coach? Both have certifications to provide services, both have years of hands on experience, and both care for their clients health and well-being. One differentiating factor is that a surgeon (depending on type) more often than not deals with people who are seeking "sickcare".

Sickcare companies are organizations, devices and services that help individuals after experiencing something that prevent them from living their best life. Such as the surgeon mentioned above, hospitals/clinics, and medical device companies.

We are lucky that we have options for both sickcare and healthcare, with the goal being that you utilize and learn things to maintain your health so you don't spend much time in the sickcare avenues. In other words, your sickcare provider should not want to see you for a long period of time while your healthcare provider helps foster an ongoing relationship.

One of my favorite examples is an individual that says they have been seeing their same therapist (physical, psycho) for "years" now. If a certain problem persists, the client is best served by getting an alternative opinion or being "referred out" to someone else.

At Pedestal, we have received much interest from companies who are seeking our products as part of their benefits package (yes, these companies must be awesome to work for). While we also provide a tangible product for people to use, we also provide ongoing programming to help guide them through exercises to strengthen their whole body from the ground up. Eventually we will change the whole footwear arena and get people back to their most pure and natural state. This is a state where you are most powerful as well.

Like the top strength coaches who use our products and recommend them, we too are a healthcare provider.

    With Love,
